For years, the water industry has favoured PVC pipe for its corrosion resistance, but its lack of strength makes it susceptible to catastrophic failure.
Iron pipe has been around for generations but corrosion was always its nemesis. While other attempts to stop corrosion have been offered, they have had their drawbacks.
Now, a new zinc-epoxy coating has got corrosion licked. Zinc is applied directly after annealing to give it a strong bond. Then the pipe is coated with a semi-porous epoxy coating. The micropores in the epoxy are the key: over time, zinc salts fill the pores, creating a barrier that blocks out corrosion agents. This technique gives ductile iron pipe a distinct advantage over PVC. In fact ductile iron is now the pipe of choice for many large cities around the world.
Pipe Corrosion Protection
NuBlu is designed for moderately aggressive soil conditions:
- Natural peaty soils with resistivity between 1800 and 2500 ohm.cm without water table
- Natural soils containing coal, ironstone or shale without water table
- Natural soils with pH range 5<pH<6 without water table
- Made-up ground containing clinker, brick, flints and other materials likely to cause mechanical damage without water table.
